HSCF Hosts Congressional Briefing on Issues Facing Returning Veterans with Disabilities

The HSC Foundation in partnership with the House Armed Services Committee and the offices of Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Representative Hank Johnson (D-GA) hosted a congressional briefing on August 3, 2011 in Washington, DC to discuss the issues facing returning veterans with disabilities.

Representatives from Operation Homefront, Wounded to Work Institute, BAE Systems, Able Forces, Inc., Not Alone and Student Veterans of America contributed to a panel discussion on the challenges awaiting veterans when they return home in the areas of higher education, employment, mental health and day-to-day life.

“The men and women who superbly serve our country need our help in making a transition back into their communities,” said the moderator of the event and former chief of the Army Nurse Corps Gale S. Pollock, Major General (Retired), CRNA, FACHE, FAAN. “They want to continue serving and contributing to our nation. The audience who attended our panel was clearly energized and I am optimistic about the progress and support that will result.”

Student Veterans of America and Able Forces, Inc are founding partners of The HSC Foundation’s National Veterans Center within the new National Youth Transitions Center in Washington, DC. Scheduled to open on October 26th, the new facility will bring together regional and national organizations, policymakers, government agencies, and advocates to provide support, services and training for young veterans and young people with disabilities.

“The Veterans Center at the National Youth Transitions Center will be a cornerstone in the veteran community and a one-stop center for returning soldiers,” said Skip Rogers of Able Forces, Inc., a non-profit that provides career-oriented employment exclusively to veterans.

“There’s a new population of returning, young combat veterans that must cope with complex transition challenges,” said President and CEO of The HSC Foundation, Thomas W. Chapman, EdD, MPH. “With the opening of the National Veterans Center around the corner, the congressional briefing is the first of many dialogues The HSC Foundation will host to raise awareness on transition support.”
