James has managed his deafness quite well and has positive social interactions with his friends and family members. However, as he enters his teenage years he is becoming more independent and his needs to communicate with friends and family are increasing. The Sidekick 2, a text messaging device allows James to communicate with friends through instant messenger and other internet features. Also his mother is able to contact him while he is out and he always has a quick way to contact home in case of emergency. For his Dose of Kindness award, James received a year’s worth of service for his Sidekick 2.
Julius’ expressive language skills are well below those of others in his age group. Although he often has difficulty expressing himself, his teachers note that he gets along fine in school and with his peers. However, his mother, as well as his teachers, sees his frustration with his language skills. His mother thought that a computer would help improve his speech. He would be able to get computer software that has learning tools as well as speaking programs that are interactive. Julius would be able to use his computer even more as he gets older, both for school and recreation.
Praise is a young boy with Cerebral Palsy. He does not walk nor talk, and has a difficult time with many foods. Praise’s Dose of Kindness award consisted of several things that would make his life more comfortable. His mother thought a rug on their wood floors would make it easier for Praise to crawl and move around; she also thought a juicer and blender would allow her to make juices and smoothies that Praise would enjoy and that would also be good for him. His award also included some much needed household supplies. Praise’s Dose of Kindness award was generously provided by the Abilities Network.
