Healthy Lifestyles Initiative
The HSC Foundation offers members of underserved communities throughout the metropolitan area access to the necessary resources and tools to help them make life style changes that are critical for healthy living through its partnerships with outcome-driven nonprofit organizations and community stakeholders. Through our partnerships, The HSC Foundation works to eliminate barriers that impede individuals and families from taking advantage of programs and services that promote healthy living.
The HSC Foundation’s Healthy Lifestyles Initiative incorporates five key principles that define a healthy lifestyle:
Obesity: What Works, What’s Promising is a new report released by The HSC Foundation. The report identifies 10 successful models for combating childhood obesity and recommends the establishment of a Washington regional consortium to initiate a pilot obesity prevention program for low-income children ages zero to five and for pregnant women.

Download your FREE copy of the District of Columbia Safe Homes Resource Guide. The Guide was prepared to help families in the District of Columbia maintain a safe and healthy home. It includes information and resources provided by Federal and District agencies, as well as many community-based organizations. The guide contains information on environmental health threats, such as lead, asbestos, radon, carbon monoxide, indoor asthma triggers, and toxic household products; as well as home safety issues, such as fire hazards, slip and fall issues, and infant and toddler safety issues.

The Healthy Lifestyles Resource Directory was prepared to help families find resources that can help them adopt healthier lifestyles. The directory includes information on community-based programs and services in the Washington Metropolitan Area related to: physical activity, nutrition education, weight management, walking, biking trails, resources for free food and meals, shopping, transportation, food delivery as well as educational and entertaining websites for children and teens on healthy living topics.

Consumer Health Foundation
Grant for Fresh Food Financing Initiatives for low-income communities of color in DC and PG County.
Food Research & Action Center, Inc. – DC Hunger Solutions
Grant to help connect HSC Health Care System clients/families to the federal nutrition programs available to them.
Health Services for Children with Special Needs, Inc. (HSCSN) Outreach Department
Healthy Living Center grant to provide movement classes, including yoga, belly dancing, and Jazzercise, at no cost to families in Ward 8.
National Center for Children and Families (NCCF)
Grant to a NCCF community school, JC Nalle Elementary in Ward 7, to offer family cooking and fitness classes for the students and their families.
National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality
Support of the activities around the Childhood Obesity Action network; sponsorship of the 6th Annual Forum for Improving Children’s Health Care.
Summit Health Institute for Research and Education, Inc.
Expansion of The HSC Foundation’s Community Services Resource Directory to include obesity prevention related information and resources for consumers, families, and providers.
Washington Parks and People
Capital improvement grant to a community center in Ward 7 to enable facility upgrades that will allow for classes and instruction focused on nutrition, healthy cooking, and physical activity.
